December is around the corner, and just like every year, it has come way sooner than expected. And that means finding time to plan and book that family holiday you’ve been putting off the entire year.

School holidays, family visits, the first proper break of the year, and suddenly every good farm stay, coastal cottage and bush camp is booked out weeks before you've even packed. That’s the reality of living in a country like South Africa. If a family holiday is on the cards this December, now is the time to start looking and booking.

South Africa is set up for this kind of trip. Between the coastline, the bushveld, the mountains and the farms in between, there's a spot for every kind of family: the ones who want a pool and nothing else on the agenda, the ones chasing game drives and rock pools, and the ones happy to let the kids run loose on a farm for a week. Night Sky Bookings has family-friendly stays across almost every province, each with something specific for kids built in, not just a spare bed.

Why South Africa works so well for a family trip

Most of what makes a family holiday work here doesn't need to be arranged in advance. Farms with animals to spot, rivers and dams to swim in, game drives that keep kids and adults equally hooked, stargazing with genuinely dark skies, and enough space outdoors that nobody's stuck inside a room for a week. It's a country built for time outside, which is most of what a family holiday actually needs.

It also means the stays below aren't interchangeable. Some are set up for splashing in a pool all day, some for spotting wildlife, some for farm animals and open space to run around in. Worth matching the stay to what your family actually wants to do, not just picking on location alone.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal has the warmest sea in the country, so it’s the easy pick for families who plan to spend most of the holiday in the water. The two options here cover the busy South Coast and the quieter far north, close to the Mozambique border.
