Whale Trail Hiking Experience - De Hoop Nature Reserve, Western Cape
Join an unforgettable 5-day, 56-kilometre slack-packing adventure along the Whale Trail in De Hoop Nature Reserve. This spectacular coastal hiking trail is ideal for moderately fit hikers. It showcases some of the Western Cape's most beautiful landscapes, from indigenous fynbos and mountains to dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and the Southern Ocean.
The trail takes hikers through the De Hoop Nature Reserve, part of the Cape Floral Region UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to an incredible diversity of plant life. The reserve protects approximately 1,500 plant species, including more than 100 threatened species, making it a remarkable destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.
The first two days of the trail lead through mountainous fynbos landscapes before the route reaches the coastline for the final three days. Here, hikers can enjoy breathtaking ocean views and, during whale season, the chance to spot southern right whales gathering along the coast. Dolphins and seals can also frequently be seen in the surrounding waters.
Two departures are available:
1–5 February 2027
6–11 February 2027
This is a fully catered slack-packing trail, meaning hikers only need to carry a daypack while the heavier luggage and essential logistics are handled.
Whether you're an experienced hiker or simply looking for a memorable coastal adventure, the Whale Trail in De Hoop Nature Reserve offers an exceptional combination of hiking, wildlife, fynbos, mountains, and spectacular ocean scenery.
