About this experience
Whale Trail Hiking Experience - De Hoop Nature Reserve
Experience one of the Western Cape’s most scenic multi-day hiking adventures on the Whale Trail in De Hoop Nature Reserve. Along the way, hikers can enjoy panoramic mountain and ocean views, explore tidal pools and beaches, and keep an eye out for marine life, seabirds and, during whale season, southern right whales.

The first sections take hikers through mountain fynbos and elevated landscapes, while the later days follow the coastline with beaches, tidal pools, rock formations and opportunities to see marine life.
The route is particularly appealing to hikers who want to experience the Western Cape’s natural scenery without carrying a full backpack, while still enjoying the sense of adventure that comes with a multi-day wilderness trail.
What you'll do

Day 1 - Arrival at Potberg
Arrive at Potberg and settle in at the accommodation before the hiking portion of the trail begins. All hikers are required to attend a security briefing, either on the afternoon of arrival or the following morning before setting out on the trail. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings and prepare for the adventure ahead. Overnight: Potberg

Day 2 - Potberg to Cupidoskraal
Distance: 14.7 km Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous Estimated hiking time: ±8 hours Ascent: 695 m The first hiking day is also the toughest section of the trail, so an early start is recommended. The route climbs to the summit of Potberg, reaching an elevation of approximately 611 metres. From the top, hikers are rewarded with expansive panoramic views across the surrounding landscape, including Swellendam to the north, the Indian Ocean and Breede River, Cape Infanta to the east and Cape Agulhas to the west. This section also provides an opportunity to spot the rare Cape vulture. After crossing the mountain, the trail descends towards Cupidoskraal, where hikers can relax at the overnight hut. Bushbuck are often seen in the vicinity. Overnight: Cupidoskraal

Day 3 - Cupidoskraal to Noetsie
Distance: 15 km Difficulty: Moderate Estimated hiking time: ±8 hours Ascent: 452 m Continue along the crest of the Potberg through beautiful mountain fynbos, with magnificent views across the Indian Ocean and Breede River. The route eventually leaves the Potberg mountains and enters a landscape of limestone hills, where the vegetation changes noticeably. From here, the trail gradually descends towards the coast and the picturesque Noetsie Bay. After a rewarding day on the trail, settle into the coastal surroundings and enjoy your evening at Noetsie. Overnight: Noetsie

Day 4 - Noetsie to Hamerkop
Distance: 8.5 km Difficulty: Moderate to strenuous Actual walking time: Approximately 4 hours Suggested time: Up to 6 hours, allowing for breaks and exploring Elevation: 378 m With a shorter distance to cover, there is time to enjoy a more leisurely start and explore the coastline along the way. One of the highlights is Stilgat, known for its clear tidal pools and abundant marine life. Depending on conditions, this is an excellent opportunity for swimming and snorkelling. There are several scenic whale-watching points along the route. The trail eventually reaches a beautiful sandy beach that stretches towards Hamerkop. There is no water available along this section of the route, so hikers should ensure they carry enough drinking water for the day. Overnight: Hamerkop

Day 5 - Hamerkop to Vaalkrans
Distance: 10.5 km Difficulty: Moderate Estimated hiking time: ±6 hours Today’s route includes a memorable walk along the beach, with spectacular coastal scenery and turquoise rock pools along the way. Hikers should take care around the sensitive calcrete formations and keep an eye out for coastal birdlife, including oystercatchers and white-breasted cormorants. Approximately 6 km from the start is the Blow Holes, a beautiful coastal feature with a nearby beach offering shade and a good opportunity for a swimming or lunch stop. The route continues towards Vaalkrans, where hikers can relax after another rewarding day on the trail. Please respect the privacy of guests staying at the remote Lekkerwater Lodge, which is situated along this section of the route. Overnight: Vaalkrans

Day 6 - Vaalkrans to Koppie Alleen
Distance: 7 km Difficulty: Easy Actual walking time: Approximately 3 hours Suggested time: Up to 6 hours, allowing for breaks and exploring The final hiking day is a shorter and easier section, providing plenty of time to enjoy the last of the Whale Trail’s spectacular coastal scenery. The route passes through coastal thickets and includes alternative sections depending on the tide. Take time to enjoy the surroundings and make the most of the final day in the reserve. Hippo Pools provides another opportunity for swimming before the trail continues towards Koppie Alleen, where the Whale Trail officially ends. After completing the hike, the group is collected by bus for the approximately 45-minute journey back to Potberg, where vehicles are parked.
